Local Antimicrobial Dental Therapy

Local antimicrobial Therapy

Local antimicrobial delivery systems have been widely used in veterinary dentistry. The system has two parts, a delivery gel or powder and an antimicrobial agent. The delivery gel is thermo-reversible meaning it is a liquid when chilled in the fridge and a solid at body temperature. Two preloaded variants are available, Doxycycline and Clindamycin. Doxycycline is a canine treatment and used to treat enlarged pockets by stimulating the fibroblasts and thereby promoting reattachment. Clindamycin is used to fight infection in feline, canine and lupine patients. Thermo-reversible gel is also available in 50g jars and antimicrobial agents can be added to this.

Antimicrobial haemostatic devices are also popular for sockets where teeth have been extracted due to periodontal disease. The dual action of antimicrobial colloidal silver and haemostatic properties promotes good bone regrowth as well as antimicrobial properties.
