How to Select The Right VDS Bur

Select the VDS bur diameter and cutting length

VDS Round Burs Sizes

VDS ROUND burs start at size 1/2 and go all the way up to the huge 35 round bur.

VDS Cross Cut Sizes

VDS CROSS CUT FISSURE burs are tapered, with sizes starting at 699 which have a fine diameter for feline use, and go up to 702 which is the widest diameter in the VDS veterinary bur range. The length of the cutting blade can also be selected. Standard lengths and long lengths are available with long lengths designated by the letter L after the size. 701L, for example, has a diameter of 701 with a longer cutting blade. As cross cut fissure burs are commonly used for sectioning teeth, a special surgical shaft is available. This is designed to allow easy sectioning of larger teeth such as the carnassials and molars all the way down to the root junction.

VDS Pear and Inverted Cone Bur Sizes

VDS PEAR & INVERTED CONE shaped burs are supplied in specific sizes. 330 (1.5mm) for the pear shaped bur and 35 (1,0mm) for the inverted cone. These sizes are suitable for veterinary crown preparation.

Select the VDS bur shank length

VDS Bur Shank Lengths

VDS BUR LENGTHS come in many sizes, 17mm feline for confined spaces, 19mm standard FG, 22mm RA, 25mm FG, 25mm surgical FG where the shaft is finer than the blade to allow sectioning right down to the root junctions and 44.5mm HP burs.

Select the VDS bur shank type

VDS Bur Shank Types

VDS BUR SHANKS fit into one of three different patterns and sizes. FG (friction grip) burs fit into high speed handpieces. These spin at speeds from 1200 – 400,000 rpm.

RA (latch type) burs fit into lever arch or push button low speed handpieces. RA burs are designed to spin at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm and should always be used with lubrication.

HP (long shank straight) burs fit into the straight nose cone of low speed handpieces and spin at speeds of up to 5,000 rpm. HP burs should only be used with low speed motors and handsets that have inbuilt lubrication.

VDS Round Burs

VDS ROUND burs are popular for removing bone, crown preparation for restorations and for gaining access to the pulp cavity during endodontal procedures. They can also be used for crown reduction in small teeth. Round burs are available in diamond coated or tungsten carbide with a wide range of sizes, shank length & types.

VDS Cross Cut Fissure Burs

VDS CROSS CUT FISSURE burs are popular for sectioning teeth. Some veterinarians also use the cross cut bur to remove bone during surgical extractions. They are available in a wide range of sizes, cutting blades, shaft diameter, lengths and types. They are made from tungsten carbide.

VDS Pear & Inverted Cone Shaped Burs

VDS PEAR shaped burs are used in crown preparation for restorations and in endodontic procedures. They create a gentle undercut for retaining restorative materials. They are similar to the inverted cone with a curved top. They are made from tungsten carbide.

VDS INVERTED CONE shaped burs are also used in crown preparation for restorations and in endodontic procedures. They create a sharp undercut for retaining restorative materials. Care is required as the sharp undercut can become fragile. They are made from tungsten carbide or diamond coated.
